John Brunning
Broadcaster |
John Brunning was born in southeast England, and it was there that his broadcasting career began in 1970.The authorities took exception to his unlicensed broadcasts on his pirate radio station and raided the premises, seizing a cache of transmitting equipment. Brunning narrowly escaped prosecution only being fifteen at the time(!) but it was the beginning of a life-time fascination.
An temporary absence from the airwaves saw John pursuing the other love of his life, music. He was lead guitarist with the seventies band Mungo Jerry and also a hard working studio session player, writer and teacher of the instrument.
But the lure of the airwaves persisted, and he resurfaced in his broadcasting guise in Glasgow as the front man for Radio Clyde’s news service.
After a successful spell north of the border, Brunning headed south again to become breakfast news editor at Invicta Radio in Kent, before being invited to join Classic FM as a senior journalist and newscaster two weeks before the station went on air in September 1992.
In 1996 John Brunning was awarded silver at the Sony Radio Awards in London for news presentation, simultaneously receiving a gold medal at the New York Radio Festival for best news anchor.
John presents Classic FM’s flagship news and arts programme, Classic Newsnight, which is broadcast every weekday evening between 6.30 and 7.00 PM. He will also be recognised by many as the voice presenting “Smooth Classics at Seven”, the ultimate classical music wind-down, which airs seven nights a week.
Based once again in his hometown in southeast England, Brunning now makes time to take a journey into the world of serious literature, reading a selection of poetry by Johannes Bobrowski.
